Chuck ..or anyone else,
Has anyone got SMTP working on their slice?
I see postfix is installed. I can't telnet to it on port 25 though, but I presume that's because port 25 is not open in the firewall?

thanks

Hi!

You can log on to your server console through ssh and then telnet localhost 25. Then you ommit problem of open/closed port on the firewall.

On my WiFi Gator server which was installed from a DVD Postfix is working and listeninig on the port 25.

Being on the server console you can also use the command netstat to see all your opened ports. Here is a usful link: http://www.thelinuxsociety.org.uk/content/netstat-how-to-read-it

Cheers,
Przemek.

I coulden't get it, so i just started over from scratch.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PostfixBasicSetupHowto

Very nice little guide there on setting up postfix on ubuntu.

Got it all straight now.

Oh ps telnet isnt installed on the slice by default. u gotta
Code:
apt-get install telnet

But aparently netcat localhost 25 works the same as telnet localhost 25 if u wana use that instead.

and also dig is not installed ..which can be installed via
Code:
apt-get install dnsutils

Startech.. Is this something you think I should install on the base slice templates? I have a feeling the answer is yes..

If you think others could use this, I will add it to the default setup..

yeah just make sure mailx is installed. people will still have to run the config for postfix to enter their domain name and such, but reinstalling mailx and postfix got the basic functionality working. I think the problem was mailx tho.

Now i can send out email via php which is good for contact forms on our websites, contact form from the splash/login page, and to have the server send me alerts when stuff goes down/wrong.

So the run down goes like this?

Install:

telnet
dnsutils
mailx

Is there any other pre-configuration I should do?

:?:

apt-get install postfix
apt-get install mailx
apt-get install dnsutils
apt-get install telnet

postconf -e "inet_interfaces = all"

restart postfix

the end users then will need to do
postconf -e "mydestination = mail.yourdomain.com, localhost.localdomain, localhost, yourdoamin.com"

Optional for pop3 and IMAP:
sudo apt-get install courier-pop
sudo apt-get install courier-imap
sudo postconf -e "home_mailbox = Maildir/"
sudo postconf -e "mailbox_command = "

Cool.. I am going to do the base installations and put the postconf instructions in the server setup wizard, so it will plug in the proper domain name when the firmware gets built and the rest of the server settings are dispursed throughout the system..

Thanks, you 'da man... as usual....

I have not looked to see if spamassasin and mailscanner are setup, but that is the next step to deal with spam and viri. But that gets you basic outgoing mail for now.

My template based in 3.3.8.2 is not sending mail. Port 25 is closed. What I need to do?
