Other than the awsome coolness factor that having a desktop on the slice would be, would this benefit me to have? Another words, is there going to be a benefit such as easier controls, updating, managing, anything like that? As is, the server is really easy to maintain. Was just wondering if it would be worth the effort? I am just not knowledgeable enough in this area to see a potential benefit, hope one of you two could help me out in this area...

No, it is just a gimmick that is a cool toy to play with and it offers another way to use the server for other purposes, that's all..

The update would be to be running the 3.0.x version on the slice.. Is that what you are running now or is it still the 2.1.0?

Either way, whnever we do update your slice and it has to be a full slice reinstallation to update it, you will end up with the desktop at that time..

And KDE doesn't launch unless you login to the remote desktop, so it isn't bogging down the system because it generally isn't running remote desktop..

But if you did have a reason to want to mess with openoffice or other linux applications available with KDE desktop, then this is the reason you would want this feature.. Not necessarily anything to do with the wifigator program..

I am running the 3.0 version now. No need to go through the effort of updating just for a new toy. I like it as is, works very well for me. Thanks for the info!

balaso.. no problem.. you will end up with it at some point when we have to do a full slice update as we get closer to completion of the goals for the program..

Windows Client does not seem to work on Vista 64 bit just yet. Installs fine, but seems to hang when loading the desktop.

XP client works great.

Will test it on Vista 32 bit later today...got a big meeting coming up.

I get the error:

Cannot run 'startkde', ensure requested app is in path and that you have appropraite credentials to run it.

Awesome method for remoting, BTW.

WDE 3.3.1

Thanks,
Richard

 Post subject: Securing SSH
PostPosted: Sun Feb 08, 2009 9:18 pm
Just applied the recommended changes by SRW to secure ssh and installed fail2ban. Now I can look at the /var/log/fail2ban.log (I use nano for viewing and editing) to see if my system is being messed with.

Thanks for the great support and a very helpful forum.

Richard

Tweak:
Step 3. edit the /etc/sshd/sshd_config -> should be /etc/ssh/sshd_config
